How to make a smooth bowl of matcha
A few simple steps give the tea room to whisk into a fine, even foam. Adjust the amount of water to find the texture you enjoy.
What you’ll need
- 2 g matcha (about one level teaspoon)
- 70 ml water, around 75°C
- A small bowl, a fine tea strainer, and a bamboo whisk
Whisking, step by step
- Warm the bowl, then dry it before adding the tea.
- Sift the matcha into the bowl to break up small clumps.
- Add the water and whisk briskly in a W-shaped motion for about 15–20 seconds, until fine bubbles form.
- Drink soon after whisking, while the foam is fresh.
Matcha can vary with harvest and milling, so use these amounts as a starting point and follow any preparation notes supplied with your tea.
